The Business

Punk first manifested itself for me not as a road to Damascus type experience but moreof a 89 bus to Lewisham on the way home from school experience, when the business formed punk was in the doldrums the first wave of punk had sold out to the corporate level, we were the second wave, our punk rock came off of the streets we actually practised what the first wave preached ,we represented more of a real form of punk rock.

The art punk movement a group called Wire were the most attended in my opinion the fall did not play on a regular basis when they did it was more of an event ,the group which I found to be the best from the art punkmovement was a group called (the sound) and their songs were outstanding, and they sounded very is similar to the cure but with better songs. With the anarchy punk movement I felt crass were unbelievable, probably the most intelligent punk group that there ever was, they took the anarchy movement to extreme!

The first of business rehearsal consisted of the band rehearsing without the singer who spent most of the time in the pub down the road! The first show was in the legendary venue skunks supporting was southern death cultwho later went on to be the cult this is where you have your Steve,s mixed up (i’m Steve whale).

The first business album that was recorded at Matrix Studios was stolen and disappeared so the second first album was recorded at Fleetwood Mac Studio in Guildford with the Cockney rejects producing, which leads into the famous Rick Wakeman story…

To cut it short, Rick Wakeman was recording his new album the drum track was recorded at night so it kept everybody awake all night, someone I don’t know who took it upon himself to have a big shit
on Rick Wakeman keyboard he tried to have have us thrown out but the manager was laughing so much he took no notice!

The Street punk movement has enveloped into a massive music movement I think the perfect example is the drop kick Murphy’s so many kids identify with thesimplicity of the message that it has spawned a 1000 more bands I am glad to say.Secret records were exactly that, I heard so many rumours who was behind secret records all I can say is that it must have been some body very big, might be an idea to ask Wattiefrom exploited what he thinks of secret records!

A first album was released late because it got stolen and we had to re-record itI think only crass really believed It could bring around social change but all in allI feel punk did change the whole world and its social values-this is one of the biggest legacies that any movement could leave.

I guess our main audience is Europe and Usa because we spend so much time touring theirthe USA seems to have adopted the business as one of their own and it’s always a pleasure to play in the USA.

When I first heard John Lyden was going to be on I’m a celebrity I was so disappointedlittle did I no that once again he was playing the system at its own game he’s the best thing that’s happened to music in many years enough said…

The Jolly Boys outing

It was cold and early in the morning when there was a knock on the door, I new it was the drummer straightaway, because it started speeding up This signalled the start of the jolly boys outing which basically consists of All the UK punk bands with the biggest drink problem, you put them on a aeroplane Ship them out to an unsuspecting country cause as much trouble and chaos as possible And then leave quickly. The US Army have studied the Jolly Boys to try and pick up some tips, So you can imagine what a dangerous combination this is. The leader Darren Russell is a master Organiser he is the head Jolly Boy. He picks the best. For this job which was quite tricky He picked exploited the business red alert, demob anti nowhere league ,the lurkers, the crack And the Cockney rejects. Our first mission was to meet at Heathrow Airport bar and drink a lot of beer and be very jolly, We got there quite early and mickey was annoyed that some of the band’s had beaten us To the bar and were quite drunk already, UK’s finest was there and I heard somebody talking about cutting their toes off So they could get closer to the bar. Darren had given out all the tickets And we were ready for our mission. Somehow everybody managed to get on to the aeroplane even though the barmaid had been moaning about some moody notes That had been passed over, I don’t know who done that, The flight started off quite well a bit like a bingo outing everybody had their lucky pens and was filling in the immigration forms Forms before they got drunker, lucky enough I was sitting next to my friends Wattie and kev and a bottle of absent Which lasted 10 minutes, kev By the way is the only person I know to bet on a horse that go on a parking ticket, it looked like everybody had a bottle of spirits in some form it dint take long before things , Darren kept saying it’s my round and pulled out a 10 bob note from the Seventies Which apparently was to change from the last round that he bought, behind me something happened it turned out That someone got punched in the face because they thought they had stolen their new bon jove tape, and then kev next to me decided to try and Pull the arm off his chair, so things were going quite well ,they cut our drinks off I dont no why? we arrived at at Tokyo airport on time after 13 hours of drinking so we were quite jolly , i noticed that some of us were doing piggyback rides to immigration booth which got the occasional glance, how all of us got Through is still a mystery to Me, we all piled on to the coach waiting outside for us put our bags in the coach and other People’s and sang a few choruses of i am turning Japanese and tried to get the cassette player to work unfortunately The driver only had one tape, Rolf Harris’s greatest hits or should I say hit , tie Me kangaroo Down Sport was Everybody’s favourite.so it got played a few times. We got to the hotel and straight to the local bar, To be more jolly than we was. Someone ran up a large drinks bill in the bar and disappeared so we all got thrown out the one thing that I noticed about Japan was that everything was miniaturised so I guessed that’s why all the Japanese girls looked so miserable, the toilets were so small it was like getting into a wet suit, I noticed that after one-day everybody had a bump on their head, where the door frames were so small The next day was the show everybody got it togethere and over the two days the English bands were outstanding The party carried on backstage the promoter thought we must have opened a off-licence because of the amount of beer That we were drinking , I had to teach two bass players our songs because Terry had been beaten up because he never Took his library books back or something like that, Lanie from leatherface played six songs and John from the league played six songs, and Arthur from lurkers played drinking and driving even though I don’t think he knew He played it, The next night all the bands found a karaoke bar it had cobwebs across a door and a barmaid had no teeth but it was Cheap, it was dan from the Leagues birthday so we had an excuse to be jolly we drank beer with bits floating in it And had the best night of the weekend we all took turns in singing a crap song:i think YMCA went down the best You name it we murdered it, after two hours things were getting out of control and Mickey jumped on mark from the crack Back he collapsed and the building shook we later found out he had no kneecaps, and he didn’t move for 30 minutes Because of the pain he was in,we were asked to leave and pay our bill Darren went to the toilet we paid the bill We then realised we had two hours to get to the airport, somehow we made it, we all looked like we had been dragged through a hedge backwards , the closest that I have seen to us walking it into the airport, was the Michael Jackson video Thriller , Mark from the crack was in a wheelchair and in a lot of plain despite all the drink, while he was in The queue someone let one of his tyres down so we had to find another Wheelchair, when the airline saw us they brought out A legal document for all of us to sign before we got on to the aeroplane saying that we wouldn’t be jolly on the aeroplane Going home despite that Danny and i manage to drink a bottle of vodka for his birthday which was the perfect Ending to the Jolly Boys outing.
