Robbie Fulks is a country singer who seems to have a love-hate relationship with country music. His Bakersfield honky-tonk two-steps, banjo-backed hoedowns and gruesome murder ballads are more closely tied to the grand country-and-western tradition than any soft rock that comes in a Stetson. Because the subversive Chicago-based singer/songwriter’s rootsy raw tunes twang like nothing on country radio today, he’s been tagged “alternative country”. He is one of America’s finest songwriters. He is rough and raw and real, he is for those of you who aren’t afraid to get a little dirt under your nails or spill a little gin on yourself. This as good as country gets!
