With a band name like Richmond Fontaine, one would assume that the group was titled after its leader/main member. Actually, Mr. Fontaine is a down-and-out character that band front man Willy Vlautin met on a visit to Mexico. Hailing from Portland, OR, Richmond Fontaine has been around for five years, producing a sound some could pigeonhole as “alt-country”; somewhere alongside the lines of Uncle Tupelo, the band balances its taste for punk rock with its love for pedal steel blending settled-down folk with fiery energy. The group writes compelling songs that tell stories about weary characters trying to figure out what is fictional and what is factual. Either way, it’s a fun challenge!
