My So-Called Friend is a power-pop foursome from Boston, Massachusetts. The band was born in the summer of 2005 when Erik Carleton (vocals, guitar) and Andrew Sgro (guitar, vocals) decided to abandon their old projects and team up to write a record that blended both of their loves: song craft and power pop. They quickly found a rhythm section in Dave Trombley (bass) and Erik’s brother, Tim (drums). After sending a couple of demo tracks and teaming up with producer Scott Riebling (Fallout Boy/Gym Class Heroes/Cobra Starship/The Academy Is/We The Kings/American Hi-Fi), the band embarked on their debut recording project. On October 20th, 2006, the record was released.
Only two weeks after the record was completed, even before its official release, the band received a contract from MTV, airplay from Boston’s WBCN, and was featured in the Boston Metro, Northeast Performer, The Noise, and Boston Herald. Recently, My So-Called Friend received a headlining slot at NEMO, was invited to participate in the WBCN Rock and Roll Rumble, won a slot in the Boston finals of Emergenza, and exploded on the Boston scene with the help of Sidehatch Entertainment. Still, MSCF works tirelessly to secure themselves as one of Boston’s best buzz bands, always writing better songs, playing better gigs, and throwing better parties.
The results of MSCF’s work have been staggering. The band has alreay opened a sold out Paradise Rock Club and played Boston’s Axis, Paradise, and Avalon as well as New York’s CBGB’s, Arlene’s Grocery, The Viper Room in L.A. and Seattle’s Showbox. Polished, upbeat, and energetic, their live performance draws comparisons to bands like the All-American Rejects, Fallout Boy, Boys Like Girls, and My Chemical Romance and has earned them a slot in the 2007 Vans Warped Tour.
Currently, My So-Called Friend is putting together a national fall tour and prepping for a handful of college shows. They have recently recorded new songs as part of a demo EP project and look to reenter the studio to lay down a number of new tracks written since the October release of their self-titled debut.
