Colorado Springs, Colorado’s Laymen Terms are a punk inspired rock band taking musical inspiration from bands such as Hum, Jimmy Eat World, Alkaline Trio, Jawbreaker, and Samiam, but Laymen Terms heavy guitar sound mixed with infectious hooks and melodic harmonies gives the band a sound all their own.
Laymen Terms formed in late 2001, and quickly signed to Soda Jerk Records out of Boulder, CO in the Summer of 2002. The band released an EP titled An Introduction and a full length album titled Since Last December on the Soda Jerk label before the label disbanded in the spring of 2003. Laymen Terms have embarked on over five tours across the West and Mid-West portion of United States in order to bulid a fan base regionally, performing in 12 different states in their region. Laymen Terms have been fortunate enough to tour and share the stage with such diverse bands as Bright Eyes, Rise Against, Sum 41, Unwritten Law, Gob, the Weakerthans, Death Cab for Cutie, the Mr. T Experience, Piebald, MXPX, Finch, Thrice, Yellowcard, Brand New, Strung Out, The Lawrence Arms, Hot Rod Circuit, Planes Mistaken for Stars, Lucero, Stereotyprider, Sugarcult, Homegrown, Allister, the Gamits, Adventures of Jet, the Nobodys, Pinhead Circus, and more.
Laymen Terms’ debut full length album for Soda Jerk Records, titled Since Last December, is a testament to their heavy rock with hooks sensibility while exposing a somber side without letting the band’s guard down. In the process, Laymen Terms have evolved into pure pop but manage to retain their punk edge. Since Last December’s songs can’t be pinned down, no matter how familiar the formula. The album’s opener, Hold on Hold Tight, catapults the listener into a ten song opus that displays strong musicianship, ringing chords, harmonizing vocals, and ragged emotion that give Laymen Terms a cohesive release.
