In 1997, guitarist Aaron Turner, bassist Jeff Caxide, drummer Aaron Harris, and vocalist Chris Mereschuk formed the Boston-based metalcore band Isis. Isis gained popularity touring with the likes of Dillinger Escape Plan, Eyehategod, and Soilent Green. In 1998 they recorded their debut EP Mosquito Control. After the EP’s release they added a second guitarist, Mike Gallagher, and replaced Mereschuk with noise/electronic technician/vocalist Jay Randall. Randall stayed with the band through the recording of the Red Sea EP in 1999. Randall was then replaced by Chris Meyer, and the band recorded Celestial, which was released in 2000, giving fans their first full-length taste of Isis power.
