derek vincent smith is my given name.. I’ve had other monikers to umbrella my production under, but this is the only one that is unique on myspace. for every other name i’ve had, there is probably 100 other profiles with the same name. So i’ve stuck with what my mother gave me. I’ve been making music since I bought a bass guitar in ninth grade, and I’ve been producing music since I bought cakewalk home studio in tenth grade. I play in a band, Listen(myspace.com/listencrew), and I produce hot beats and sing pretty melodies in the production duo[occasionally trio], Pretty Lights(myspace.com/prettylights). I also run a full facility professional recording studio known as Morningwood Studios in Fort Collins CO. Artsists I’ve engineered include Lyrics Born, Karl Denson, Greyboy All-Stars, Josh Martinez, and a slew of regional artists many of whom have not blown up yet, but have a damn good chance if they push it. One of these artists, Mavrik(myspace.com/mavrik600), just dropped the promo cd for his upcoming album, most of which I produced, and its hot to the core. Don’t sleep on him.. Mavrik is about to blow!! This profile showcases some of my solo production, which will soon be a small part of an album made up entirely of my own production, which I will make available for free download at www.prettylightsmusic.com. I have been working on some video production as well, which is slowy being implemented into the Pretty Lights live performances. I love using obscure old vinyl, analog synthesizers, and vintage dub gear in my beats; because there are no replacements, no imitations, and no substitutions that come close to the sounds that this stuff creates. Someday I want to be like a Rick Rubin or a Quincy Jones of the new generation. I want to guide the visions and raw talent of young artists, and assist them in creating beautiful and truly, timeless music. In my spare time I produce & engineer local bands and solo artists (for free) that I believe have the potential to transcend the underground and reach a global audience. This is something fairly new for me, but so far, things are going quite well and I’m feeling rather optimistic regarding the future.. of my career and good music in general.
