CECILIO & KAPONO

Cecilio and Kapono have been a driving force in Hawaii’s music business for the past 35 years. Their unique blending of harmonies and musical arrangements have taken them around the world and have allowed them to produce hit after hit which have become local anthems whether performed by C&K or other top performers over the past three decades. C&K were the first of a very small number to date of artists from Hawaii to make it in the mainstream music world and receive multi album international recording contract from the then world largest recording company, Columbia Records.

The story began Back in the Day “with a harmony’s perfect blending” under a starry night on Oahu’s North Shore in February 1973. Bi-lingual & professionally trained, Hispanic Native-American, Cecilio Rodriguez and self taught, pure Hawaiian, Henry Kapono were introduced by mutual friends. Dinner, followed by an impromptu jam session “…that was the moment that everything happened. It was the first time that we sang…and we knew right then”. It was the beginning of Cecilio & Kapono!

Soon came amazing duo performances including the infamous Frank Zappa concert and Hawaii’s “Woodstock”, The Diamond Head Crater “Sunshine Festival”, leading to 8 consecutive months of SOLD OUT performances 6 nights a week at the Legendary Rainbow Villa in Waikiki. As the Villa literally ripped piece after piece of the bar out, they still could not keep up with the “C&K” phenomena.

Inevitably, C&K moved to The Waikiki Shell, Hawaii’s Amphitheatre under the stars nestled at the foot of Diamond Head, where they still hold the largest attendance record with 10,000 fans inside and another 4000 outside! Within a couple of months, C&K had a multi-album National Recording Contract with the world’s largest Record Company, Columbia Records.

Back to back SOLD OUT Waikiki Shell shows were followed by back to back SOLD OUT H.I.C. (now Neal Blaisdell Arena) shows that were followed by RECORD ATTENDANCE of 22,000+ at the Honolulu Stadium with Flash Cadilac & America and 30,000+ with their local brothers, Kalapana!

C&K went on to tour the Nation sharing the stage with some of the greatest American Artists of the time, Santana, Loggins & Messina, Boz Scaggs, Peter Frampton, Cheech & Chong…. the list goes on!

Over the course of 3 decades, The LEGENDS that are Cecilio & Kapono have become a household name throughout Hawaii and the Pacific. They have performed extensively throughout the world and continue to sell out every concert. Their impressive list of compositions have produced hit after hit and have become local standards, whether performed by C&K or other top performers, firmly rooted in Hawaii’s culture and firmly rooted in the hearts of 3 generations of fans!

C&K’s music has been the soundtrack of local living for the people of Hawaii for over three decades and it continues to sustain freshness and the essence of a lifestyle that was free, easy and fun. Just the mention of Cecilio & Kapono or “C&K” immediately conjures up a time, a place, a feeling that takes you “Back in the Day” of Good Times Together. Whether it was at the beach, surfing, BBQ’s, country parties, back yard jams, concerts at the Waikiki Shell or Diamond Head Crater, eating at Rainbow’s, going to the Rainbow Villa… we were living it and loving it! Those were great days and good times. Listening to C&K’s music is like taking a walk down memory lane. Songs like Sunshine Love, Friends, About You, You & Me, Here With You, Goodnight & Good Morning, Feeling Just the Way I Do, Highway in the Sun, Night Music, Sailing, Sunflower, Summer Lady…. The list goes on and on and takes us all “Back in the Day,” with a smile on our face and good feelings in our heart. For C&K35, Cecilio & Kapono will literally take you “Back in the Day” to relive those memories through setting, atmosphere, stories, memorabilia, and of course, music!
