Charlie who plays an eight-string guitar, provides his own basslines and leads an otherwise bassless guitar-sax-drums trio. He grew up in Berkeley, CA and began playing guitar when he was 12. Hunter played in rock bands until forming his trio with tenor saxophonist Dave Ellis and drummer Jay Lane. Although very much a jazz group, the group also displays their interests in funk and rock. In addition to recording for Blue Note with his trio, Hunter works with T.J. Kirk, a band playing the music of Thelonious Monk, James Brown and Rahsaan Roland Kirk that has recorded for Warner Bros. In 1997 Charlie Hunter toured with a two-horn quartet (his guitar not only filled in for a bass but sometimes sounded eerily like an organ) and recorded a surprisingly successful jazz transformation of Bob Marley’s reggae classic Natty Dread.
